Pashupatinath Temple
One of the holiest Hindu temples in the world, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pashupati (Lord of Animals). The complex sprawls along the Bagmati River with its main pagoda-style temple featuring a golden spire.

Best: Early morning (6–8 AM) for the most atmospheric experience; Shivaratri festival is spectacular

Boudhanath Stupa
One of the largest spherical stupas in the world and the most important Tibetan Buddhist shrine outside Tibet. The massive white dome, crowned by all-seeing eyes of the Buddha, dominates the heart of Kathmandu.
Hours: 24 hours (best experienced at dawn or dusk)
Fee: NPR 400 per person (foreign nationals)
Best: Late afternoon to evening when butter lamps are lit and the stupa is illuminated

Swayambhunath Stupa
Known affectionately as the "Monkey Temple," Swayambhunath is one of the most ancient and sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. Perched atop a hill west of Kathmandu, the stupa offers panoramic views of the entire valley.
Hours: 24 hours (temple museum: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

Best: Late afternoon for sunset views and golden hour light on the stupa

Kathmandu Durbar Square
The historic heart of old Kathmandu, a sprawling complex of temples, palaces, and courtyards that was the seat of Malla and Shah royalty. The Kumari Ghar, home to the living goddess Kumari, sits within the square.

Best: Early morning for fewer crowds; during Indra Jatra when the square comes alive

Patan Durbar Square
The finest display of Newari architecture and artistry in the Kathmandu Valley. The former royal palace complex features three main courtyards and an extraordinary concentration of temples.
Hours: Square always accessible; Patan Museum: 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM (closed Tuesday)

Best: Late afternoon when golden light brings out the warmth of the brick and wood carvings

Bhaktapur Durbar Square
The best-preserved medieval city in Nepal, Bhaktapur's Durbar Square is the largest and most complete of the three valley squares. Dominated by the 55-Window Palace and the towering Nyatapola Temple.

Lumbini Sacred Garden
The most sacred site in Buddhism, marking the exact location where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama in 623 BCE — who would become the Buddha.

Fee: Free (NPR 200 for the inner sacred garden)
Best: Early morning for the most peaceful atmosphere; Buddha Jayanti for grand celebrations
