The most sacred site in Buddhism, marking the exact location where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama in 623 BCE — who would become the Buddha.

History

Historical Background

Lumbini was lost to history until rediscovered in 1896. The Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, confirmed the site as the Buddha's birthplace.

Architecture

Architectural Significance

The Maya Devi Temple is a simple white structure covering the sacred marker stone. The surrounding garden contains ancient Bodhi trees and the Ashoka Pillar.
