Swayambhunath Stupa
Known affectionately as the "Monkey Temple," Swayambhunath is one of the most ancient and sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. Perched atop a hill west of Kathmandu, the stupa offers panoramic views of the entire valley.
Historical Background
According to legend, the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake, and Swayambhunath grew from a single lotus flower at the center. Dating back to the 5th century CE.
Architectural Significance
White dome topped by a golden spire, with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha painted on four sides of the harmika.
