Momo are Nepal's most beloved snack — delicate steamed dumplings filled with spiced meat or vegetables, served with a tangy tomato-based dipping sauce. Originally from Tibet, momo have been adopted and perfected in Nepal, becoming an integral part of the national cuisine. They are enjoyed everywhere from street stalls to five-star restaurants.

Ground buffalo, chicken, or pork
Chopped onions and garlic
Fresh ginger and cilantro
Cumin, coriander, turmeric
Tomatoes for dipping sauce (achar)
Sesame seeds and Sichuan pepper
Preparation

How It's Made

The filling is prepared by mixing minced meat or vegetables with onions, garlic, ginger, and spices. The dough is rolled into small circles, filled, and pleated into half-moon shapes. Momo are then steamed for 8-10 minutes. They can also be fried (kothey momo) or served in soup (momo ko jhol). The dipping sauce — made from fresh tomatoes, Sichuan pepper, and sesame — is essential.
