The Tharu Community
The Tharu people are the indigenous inhabitants of the Inner Terai region of southern Nepal. They have developed a unique culture adapted to the hot, humid lowlands, including remarkable resistance to malaria. Their close relationship with the forest and wildlife of Chitwan and Bardia is reflected in their traditions, architecture, and daily life.
Cultural Heritage
Tharu culture is intimately connected to the forest. Their traditional homes are built from local materials — mud walls, thatched roofs — decorated with intricate murals. They are expert farmers, fishermen, and hunters, with deep knowledge of medicinal plants. Tharu women wear distinctive silver jewelry and elaborate tattoos. Their cuisine features fish from the local rivers, wild vegetables, and dishes like ghogha (snail curry). The Tharu are renowned for their hospitality and vibrant folk traditions.
